RESUMO

BACKGROUND: Posterior mediastinal leiomyosarcoma is an extremely rare malignant mesenchymal tumor with no special clinical symptoms, which is easily confused with some common tumors in the posterior mediastinum, affecting the accuracy of the first diagnosis by clinicians and delaying the treatment of patients. CASE SUMMARY: We report a 59-year-old woman with a space-occupying lesion in the posterior mediastinum. The patient was mistakenly diagnosed with lumbar muscle or vertebral body lesions due to chest and back pain and underwent conservative treatment, but her symptoms did not improve significantly and she gradually developed pain in both lower limbs. Chest computed tomography (CT) scan indicated the left lower lung paraspinal space and underwent standard single-aperture video-assisted thoracoscopic surgery (VATS), which was pathologically confirmed as posterior mediastinal leiomyosarcoma. CONCLUSION: Complete surgical resection of posterior mediastinal leiomyosarcoma can achieve good clinical results.

RESUMO

BACKGROUND: The molecular targets and associated mechanisms of hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) have been widely studied, but the roles of PDZK1 in HCC are unclear. Therefore, the aim of this study is to explore the role and associated mechanisms of PDZK1 in HCC. RESULTS: It was found that the expression of PDZK1 in HCC tissues was higher than that in paired paracancerous tissues. High expression of PDZK1 was associated with lymph node metastasis, degree of differentiation, and clinical stage. Upregulation of PDZK1 in HCC cells affected their proliferation, migration, invasion, apoptosis, and cell cycle, and also induced PI3K/AKT activation. PDZK1 is a downstream target gene of miR-101-3p. Accordingly, increase in the expression of miR-101-3p reversed the promotive effect of PDZK1 in HCC. Moreover, PDZK1 was found to accelerate cell proliferation and promote the malignant progression of HCC via the PI3K/AKT pathway. CONCLUSION: Our study indicated that the miR-101-3p/PDZK1 axis plays a role in HCC progression and could be beneficial as a novel biomarker and new therapeutic target for HCC treatment.

RESUMO

Hypopigmented mycosis fungoides is a rare form of mycosis fungoides that is characterized by achromic lesions, early onset of disease, a predilection for darker skinned populations, and a predominance of CD8+ T cells. Due to the rarity and heterogeneous presentation of hypopigmented mycosis fungoides, there are no criteria that clearly define the clinical characteristics and treatment regimens for this condition. This retrospective study of 44 paediatric patients with hypopigmented mycosis fungoides aimed to summarize their epidemiological and clinical characteristics and assess the effectiveness and safety of different treatment regimens. Clinical manifestations were further classified into 3 morphological groups: hypopigmented lesions, papules overlying hypopigmented lesions, and erythematous plaques overlying hypopigmented lesions. In addition, the results of this study suggest that interferon alpha might be an effective and well-tolerated therapy that could shorten the treatment time to complete response compared with other treatments. Maintenance therapy and long-term follow-up reduced the recurrence rate.

RESUMO

Uveitis is a rare adverse event of dupilumab, that typically affects both eyes and often leads to discontinuation of therapy. In this article, we report a case of a 28-year-old female with atopic dermatitis who developed new-onset iridocyclitis, a form of uveitis, in her left eye 2 weeks after starting dupilumab treatment, which improved after reducing the dose, without discontinuing dupilumab. The patient also experienced asymptomatic hypereosinophilia, possibly related to dupilumab, which was gradually relieved without discontinuation. With the readers, we share our experience in managing uveitis and hypereosinophilia associated with dupilumab, which may be helpful in managing these conditions and avoiding discontinuation of dupilumab.

RESUMO

Aim: To assess the potential factors with predictive value for survival in small-cell lung cancer (SCLC) patients and to develop a nomogram prediction model. Patients & methods: We retrospectively screened and analyzed patients with pathologically confirmed SCLC from April 2015 to December 2021. Results: A total of 167 patients with SCLC were included. According to the Memorial Sloan-Kettering prognostic score (MPS), patients were divided into three groups: group 0 (n = 65), group 1 (n = 69) and group 2 (n = 33). The multivariate analysis showed that MPS was an independent prognostic factor for progression-free and overall survival in SCLC patients (p < 0.05). The nomogram showed that MPS was the most influential factor for overall survival. Conclusion: MPS is an independent prognostic factor for overall and progression-free survival in SCLC patients and performed better than other indicators used in this study.

RESUMO

Background: A comprehensive understanding of the anatomical variations in the pulmonary bronchi and arteries is particularly essential to the implementation of safe and precise left superior division segment (LSDS) segmentectomy. However, no report shows the relationship between the descending bronchus and the artery crossing intersegmental planes. Thus, the purpose of the present study was to analyze the branching pattern of the pulmonary artery and bronchus in LSDS using three-dimensional computed tomography bronchography and angiography (3D-CTBA) and to explore the associated pulmonary anatomical features of the artery crossing intersegmental planes. Materials and methods: The 3D-CTBA images of 540 cases were retrospectively analyzed. We reviewed the anatomical variations of the LSDS bronchus and artery and assorted them according to different classifications. Results: Among all 540 cases of 3D-CTBA, there were 16 cases (44.4%) with lateral subsegmental artery crossing intersegmental planes (AX3a), 20 cases (55.6%) Without AX3a in the descending B3a or B3 type, and 53 cases (10.5%) with AX3a, 451 cases (89.5%) Without AX3a in the Without the descending B3a or B3 type. This illustrated that the AX3a was more common in the descending B3a or B3 type (P < 0.005). Similarly, there were 69 cases (36.1%) with horizontal subsegmental artery crossing intersegmental planes (AX1 + 2c), 122 cases (63.9%) Without AX1 + 2c in the descending B1 + 2c type, and 33 cases (9.5%) with AX1 + 2c, 316 cases (90.5%) Without AX1 + 2c in the Without the descending B1 + 2c type. Combinations of the branching patterns of the AX1 + 2c and the descending B1 + 2c type were significantly dependent (p < 0.005). The combinations of the branching patterns of the AX1 + 2c and the descending B1 + 2c type were frequently observed. Conclusions: This is the first report to explore the relationship between the descending bronchus and the artery crossing intersegmental planes. In patients with the descending B3a or B3 type, the incidence of the AX3a was increased. Similarly, the incidence of the AX1 + 2c was increased in patients with the descending B1 + 2c type. These findings should be carefully identified when performing an accurate LSDS segmentectomy.

RESUMO

The members of Pleione (Orchidaceae) are popular worldwide due to their beautiful flowers and medicinal values. In October 2021, we observed the typical symptoms of yellow or brown leaves, rotted root, and plant death on P. bulbocodioides (Sup. S1a). Nearly 30% of the plants showed disease symptom in the farm in Zhaotong city, Yunnan Province, China. Three fresh root samples with typical symptoms were collected from the plants of P. bulbocodioides in the field. The root sections (3mm × 3mm) from the border of the symptomatic tissue were cut and sterilized with 75% ethanol for 30 s, followed by 3% sodium hypochlorite (NaClO) for 2 min, and then rinsed three times with sterile water. The sterilized root tissues were inoculated on potato dextrose agar (PDA) at 28℃ in the incubator for 3 days. The colonies were obtained and sub-cultured from the hyphal tip to the new PDA to further purify. The colonies grew up on PDA at 28℃ for 1 week, the hyphal color from white turned to purple, the center of colony became brick red. The colonies produced abundant microconidia, macroconidia and chlamydospores, but no sporodochia was observed (Sup. S2). The microconidia were oval and irregularly oval, zero to one septate, and measured 2.0 × 5.2 to 4.1 × 12.2 µm (n = 20). The macroconidia were falcate, slender, with a distinct curve to the latter half of the apical cell, three to five septate, and measured 4.0 × 15.2 to 5.1 × 39.3 µm (n = 20). Morphological characterization showed that the three isolates were similar, and appeared to be Fusarium oxysporum (Leslie and Summerell, 2006). For molecular identification, total genomic DNA of two representative isolates DSL-Q and DSL-Y were extracted with CTAB method, and the PCR amplification were performed. The sequence of partial elongation factor (TEF1-α) gene was amplified using the primer pair EF-1/EF-2 (O'Donnell et al. 1998). The sequence of ß-tublin gene (TUB2) was amplified using the primer pair T1/T22 (O'Donnell and Cigelnik, 1997). The sequences from the two isolates were obtained and sequenced. Clustal2.1 searches indicated that the sequences of the three loci of the two isolates revealed 97.8% to 100%similarity to F. oxysporum strains and were deposited in GenBank (accession nos. OP150481 and OP150485 for TEF1-α; OP150483 and OP186426 for TUB2). A pathogenicity test was performed to confirm Koch,s postulates. Inoculum was obtained from the two isolates by cultivating in 500 mL of potato dextrose broth on a shaker at 25℃. After 10 days, the hyphae grew into a cluster. The 6 individuals of P. bulbocodioides were divided into two groups. Three individuals grew in the bark substrate containing hyphae cluster, while another 3 individuals grew in the bark substrate containing sterile agar medium. The plants were kept in a greenhouse (constant temperature at 25℃, day and night for 12 h). After 20 days, the group inoculated with F. oxysporum isolates showed the same disease symptoms as observed on the plants in the field, while the control plants remained disease free. F. oxysporum was reisolated from the infected tissues (Sup. S1b, c). Phylogenetic dendrograms of Fusarium oxysporum were grouped by TEF1-α and TUB2 sequence (Sup. S3). The results confirmed that this fungus was identical to those identified by colony morphology, phylogenetic relationship and TEF1-α and TUB2 sequence. To our knowledge, this is the first report of F. oxysporum causing root rot on Pleione species in China. This is a pathogenic fungus in the production of Pleione species. Our study is helpful for the identification of root rot on Pleione species and the development of disease control strategy on cultivation.

RESUMO

Vitiligo is a common depigmentation disorder of an unknown origin characterized by the selective loss of melanocytes, resulting in typical white macules and patches. However, vitiligo is now recognized as more than just a skin disease, what a dermatologist observes as a white spot of skin is just the "tip of the iceberg" of the condition. We attempt to clarify the classification of comorbidities associated with vitiligo from various reviews and reports, and describe their possible pathogenesis. In conclusion, the literature provides evidence of an association between vitiligo and ocular and auditory abnormalities, autoimmune disorders, other dermatological diseases, metabolic syndrome and related disorders, and psychological diseases. These associations highlight the importance of a multidisciplinary approach in managing vitiligo patients.

RESUMO

Context: Tumor-associated cutaneous vascular disorder induced by PPGL was extremely rare, and the cutaneous manifestations could disappear after removal of the tumors. However, the definite pathological diagnosis and the potential mechanism remained unidentified. We presented a severe cutaneous vascular lesion manifested as diffuse erythema with ulceration and necrosis over the limbs in a female patient with metastatic paraganglioma. Skin biopsy was performed on her for defining the pathological diagnosis and potential mechanism. The patient was diagnosed as vascular disease according to the obvious angioectasia in dermis on cutaneous pathology, which might be caused by PPGL-induced hypercoagulability. We used the antiplatelet therapy with aspirin to treat the PPGL-associated cutaneous vascular disease for the first time, and the cutaneous lesions were relieved and healed gradually, further supporting the diagnosis of vascular disease. Conclusion: For metastatic PPGL patients like the case we reported, the definite diagnosis by skin biopsy and the early antiplatelet therapy might be effective to the cutaneous lesions caused by the hypercoagulable state of PPGL.

RESUMO

OBJECTIVE: This study intends to explore the factors affecting the growth of pulmonary nodules in the natural process by immunohistochemical method. METHODS: 40 cases of pulmonary nodules followed up for more than 3 years were divided into growth group (n = 20) and stable group (n = 20). The expressions of cyclooxygenase-2 (COX-2), Ki67, vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF), CD44V6, epidermal growth factor receptor (EGFR), double microsome 2 (MDM2) and transforming growth factor (TGF)-ß1 in pulmonary nodules were detected by immunohistochemical method so as to explore the relationship between it and the growth of pulmonary nodules. RESULTS: Compared with stable pulmonary nodules, the positive rates of COX-2, Ki67 and VEGF in the growth group were 85%, 80% and 55%, respectively. There was significant difference between the stable group and the growth group (P < 0.05). The correlation between other indexes and the growth of pulmonary nodules was not statistically significant (Pcd44v6 = 0.104;PEGFR = 0.337; PMDM2 = 0.49; PTGF-ß1 = 0.141). In the subgroup of patients with non-invasive lung cancer, there was a correlation between VEGF and the growth of pulmonary nodules (P < 0.05). CONCLUSION: The high expression of COX-2, Ki67 and VEGF proteins may be significantly related to the growth of pulmonary nodules, and VEGF may be an important factor affecting the growth of malignant pulmonary nodules. This study intends to provide a research direction for further searching for the essential causes of the growth of pulmonary nodules.

RESUMO

Based on social learning theory and the trickle-down effects, in which behavioral patterns cascade from one management level to the next (also known as the falling domino effect), we attempt to answer whether upper-level managers' temporal leadership can be transferred to lower-level managers to form their temporal leadership, and what the mediating mechanisms and boundary conditions for this occurrence are. By analyzing the data from 234 middle-level managers and 686 junior managers/employees, we found that top managers' temporal leadership was positively associated with middle-level managers' temporal leadership through the mediating role of middle-level managers' temporal leadership perspective and that the relationship was moderated by middle-level managers' identification with the top manager. Identification with the top manager, in particular, strengthens both the top manager's positive effect on middle-level managers' temporal leadership and the top manager's temporal leadership's mediating role in this relationship through their temporal leadership perspective. The theoretical and managerial implications of these findings are investigated.

RESUMO

Anisomeles indica (L.) Kuntze is a perennial erect herb that belongs to the genus Epimeredi, family Labiatae (Hsieh et al., 2008). This herb is distributed in several southern provinces such as Yunnan, Sichuan and Guizhou in China, and it is also exported to Southeast Asian countries such as Singapore and Malaysia (Li., 2010; Yao et al., 2019). Due to its market potential and broad development prospects, the herb has been cultivated in Yunnan. In August 2021, virus-like symptoms on leaves, including shrinking, mosaic, and yellow mottling(Fig S1. A) appeared on approximately 80% of A. indica in the experimental fields of the Kunming Institute of Botany, Chinese Academy of Science, in Kunming, Yunnan. To unveil the possible viral agents associated with the disease symptoms, leaf samples were collected from 5 plants for transmission electron microscopy (TEM) analysis using negative staining (Zhang et al., 2016). Rhabditiform-shaped particles around 300 × 18 nm (Fig S1. C) were observed, which resemble those of tobamoviruses. To identify the exact virus, total RNA was extracted from the 20 leaf samples using the RNA-easy Isolation Reagent (Vazyme, Nanjing, China), followed by reverse transcription (RT)-PCR with a degenerate tobamovirus primer pair (Li et al., 2014). A 480-bp amplicon was obtained from each sample and cloned into the pMD18-T vector for Sanger sequencing (Takara, Dalian, China). BLASTn-analysis revealed that the 20 amplicons were identical and shared 100% nucleotide sequence identity with tobacco mosaic virus (TMV) isolate Bei Cang Zhu from Atractylodes lancea (acc. no. KU198186) One sequence was deposited in the GenBank under the accession number OK489807. ELISA testing with TMV-specific antibody (Agdia, USA) produced positive results for all of the 20 leaf samples. In order to understand the difference between TMV isolates from A. indica and those form other host plants, the sequences of movement protein (MP, 807 bp) and RNA-dependent RNA polymerase (RdRp, 3351 bp) of TMV were also obtained from one of the TMV infected samples using the target gene special primers (Tab. S1), and submitted to GenBank under the accession number OM3662406 (MP) and OM366242 (RdRp). BLASTn-analysis revealed that the amplicon of MP shared 97.75% nucleotide sequence identity with TMV isolate Henan 9-2-2017 from sweet potato (MN186255.1) and RdRp shared 97.43% nucleotide sequence identity with TMV isolate SXFQ from Solanum lycopersicum (JX993906.1). Phylogenetic analysis indicated that the isolate of A. indica grouped with several TMV isolates (e.g., tomato, AF103779.1 and tobacco, HE818449.1) from Northern China. The virus was successfully transmitted onto healthy A.indica plants (n = 5) upon mechanical inoculation as the plants not only developed foliar distortion symptoms but also tested positive for TMV by RT-PCR with the CP-specific primers (Tab. S1). Taken together, our results demonstrated that the diseased A. indica plants were infected with TMV. To our knowledge, this is the first report of TMV infected A. indica (L.) Kuntze in China. Symptomatic phenotype-based field surveys on some plantations in Yunnan Province indicated that the disease incidence ranged from 70% to 90%, resulting in significant loss of production of A. indica. It is necessary to monitor the viruses in the fields and find effective methods to protect TMV in the A. indica (L.) Kuntze industry.

RESUMO

Vitiligo is a chronic treatment-resistant autoimmune disorder characterized by circumscribed depigmented maculae. This study was conducted to evaluate the efficacy and safety of tofacitinib combined with narrowband ultraviolet B (NB-UVB) phototherapy for refractory nonsegmental vitiligo. Fifteen patients with nonsegmental vitiligo resistant to conventional therapies were administered oral tofacitinib at 5 mg twice daily plus topical halometasone cream, tacrolimus 0.1% ointment, or pimecrolimus cream twice daily and NB-UVB three times per week for 16 weeks. The control group comprised 19 patients with nonsegmental vitiligo treated with topical drugs plus NB-UVB same as the combination group. Treatment efficacy was measured by the percentage of repigmentation of vitiligo lesions at 4th, 8th, 12th, and 16th week after beginning treatment. From 8th week, the repigmentation level was significantly higher in the combination group than in the controls. From fourth week, the response rate was significantly higher in the combination group than in the controls. Only one patient in the combination group reported mild pain in the hand and foot joints, but the pain subsided with cessation of therapy. No other severe adverse effects occurred. So, tofacitinib in combination with NB-UVB phototherapy may be an effective and safe alternative modality for refractory vitiligo.

RESUMO

OBJECTIVE: Lung cancer is a malignancy with high a mortality rate that threatens human health. This study is aimed to explore the correlation among the triglyceride/high-density lipoprotein ratio (TG/HDL-C), non-high-density lipoprotein/high-density lipoprotein ratio (non-HDL-C/HDL-C) and survival of patients with non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC) undergoing video-associated thoracic surgery (VATS). METHODS: This retrospective study analyzed 284 patients with NSCLC who underwent VATS at Hebei General Hospital, Shijiazhuang, China. The time-dependent receiver operating characteristic curve was used to determine the optimal cutoff value and evaluate the area under the curve. Kaplan-Meier and Cox regression analyses were performed to determine the prognostic effect. RESULTS: The median overall survival (OS) was 46 months. Patients with low TG/HDL-C and low non-HDL-C/HDL-C had a longer OS. The low non-HDL-C/HDL-C group showed a longer mean survival time (59.00 vs. 52.35 months). Multivariate analysis revealed that TG/HDL-C and non-HDL-C/HDL-C were significantly correlated with OS. CONCLUSIONS: TG/HDL-C and non-HDL-C/HDL-C are associated with the prognosis of patients with NSCLC who received VATS. Preoperative serum TG/HDL-C and non-HDL-C/HDL-C may be effective independent prognostic factors for predicting the outcomes of patients with NSCLC.

RESUMO

BACKGROUND: We sought to clarify the electrophysiological (EP) characteristics of premature ventricular contractions (PVCs) with acute successful radiofrequency catheter ablation (RFCA) near the atrioventricular node (AVN). METHODS AND RESULTS: Eighteen patients with acute successful RFCA near the AVN were included in this study. Systematic mapping was performed with two mapping methods: antegrade mapping technique (group A) and reversed C curve mapping technique (group R). RFCA was preferentially performed underneath the tricuspid valve (TV) with reversed C curve technique in all patients. The a amplitude/v amplitude ratio during sinus rhythm in group A was significantly larger than in group B (0.19 ± 0.10 vs 0.06 ± 0.02, p < 0.01). The earliest bipolar activation preceded the QRS onset in group A was significantly smaller than in group R (19.6 ± 4.9 vs 24.4 ± 6.6 ms (ms), p < 0.01). Pace mapping in group A and group R demonstrated perfect QRS morphology (12/12) match only in 5.6% (one patient) and 16.7% (3 patients) of patients, respectively. The mean duration of successful RFCA was 8.2 ± 2.4 s in 13 patients (72.2%). Early (within 3 days) and late (one-year) recurrence rates were 5.6% (one patient) and 16.7% (3 patients), respectively. No atrioventricular block occurred during RFCA or the one-year follow up. CONCLUSIONS: PVCs near the AVN are a subgroup of idiopathic PVCs with distinctive EP features. RFCA using reversed C curve technique is effective and safe for the acute elimination of these challenging AVN-PVCs.

RESUMO

OBJECTIVE: The advanced lung cancer inflammation index (ALI) can predict the survival of patients with lung cancer and other malignancies. However, the prognostic significance of ALI in neuroblastoma has not been reported. This study aimed to evaluate the correlation between ALI and neuroblastoma patient prognosis. METHODS: We retrospectively analyzed the data of 72 neuroblastoma patients treated between January 2014 and August 2020. ALI calculation: Body mass index (BMI) × serum albumin (ALB)/neutrophil-to-lymphocyte ratio (NLR). The optimal cutoff points of prognostic biomarkers were determined by generating receiver operating characteristic (ROC) curves. According to the cutoff value, the patients were categorized into low or high ALI groups. The chi-square test was used to compare clinical parameters between the two groups. Potential prognostic factors associated with overall survival (OS) were assessed using Kaplan-Meier and Cox regression analyses. RESULTS: The optimal cutoff value of ALI was 49.17. The low ALI group showed more severe clinical characteristics and poorer survival rates. Univariate and multivariate Cox analyses suggested that ALI and the International Neuroblastoma Staging System (INSS) stage were independent prognostic factors for neuroblastoma patients. CONCLUSIONS: Low ALI is associated with poor prognosis in neuroblastoma patients. ALI may be an independent prognostic biomarker for neuroblastoma.

RESUMO

Tomato zonate spotvirus (TZSV) often incurs significant losses in many food and ornamental crops in Yunnan province, China, and the surrounding areas. The pepper (Capsicum chinensePI152225)can develop hypersensitive resistance following infection with TZSV, through an as yet unknown mechanism. The transcriptome dataset showed a total of 45.81 GB of clean data were obtained from six libraries, and the average percentage of the reads mapped to the pepper genome was over 90.00 %. A total of 1403 differentially expressed genes (DEGs) were obtained after TZSV infection, including 825significantly up-regulated genes and 578 down-regulated genes. The Gene Ontology (GO) and Kyoto Encyclopedia of Genes and Genomes (KEGG) pathway analyses indicated that most up-regulated DEGs were involved in basal defenses. RT-qPCR, and virus induced gene silencing (VIGS) were used preliminarily to identifyBBC_22506 and BBC_18917, among total of 71 differentially expressed genes (DEGs), that play a key role in mediating the auxin-induced signaling pathway that might take part in hypersensitive response (HR) conferred resistance to viral infection in pepper (PI152225) byTZSV. This is the first study on the mechanism of auxin resistance, involved in defense responses of pepper against viral diseases, which lay the foundation for further study on the pathogenic mechanism of TZSV, as well as the mechanism of resistance to TZSV, in peppers.

RESUMO

OBJECTIVE: The advanced lung cancer inflammation index (ALI) predicts overall survival (OS) in patients with advanced lung cancer. However, few studies have tested ALI's prognostic effect in patients with non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC) following video-assisted thoracic surgery (VATS), especially patients at stage III. This study investigated the relationship between ALI and outcomes of patients with NSCLC following VATS. METHODS: We retrospectively examined 339 patients with NSCLC who underwent VATS at Hebei General Hospital, China. Preoperative clinical and laboratory parameters were collected and analyzed. Optimal cutoff values of potential prognostic factors, including ALI, were determined. Kaplan-Meier and Cox regression analyses were used to determine each factor's prognostic value. RESULTS: The median OS was 31 months. The optimal cutoff value for ALI was 41.20. Patients with high ALI (≥41.20) displayed increased OS (33.87 vs. 30.24 months), higher survival rates, and milder clinical characteristics. Univariate and multivariate analyses showed a significant correlation between ALI and the prognosis of patients with NSCLC, including those at stage IIIA, who underwent VATS. CONCLUSIONS: Low ALI correlated with poor outcomes in patients with NSCLC following VATS. Preoperative ALI might be a potential prognostic biomarker for patients with NSCLC following VATS, including patients at stage IIIA.

RESUMO

Although accumulating evidence suggests the COVID-19 pandemic is associated with costs in mental health, the development of students' mental health, including the change from their previous levels of depression and anxiety and the factors associated with this change, has not been well-studied. The present study investigates changes in students' anxiety and depression from before the pandemic to during the lockdown and identifies factors that are associated with these changes. 14,769 university students participated in a longitudinal study with two time points with a 6-month interval. Students completed the Anxiety and Depression subscales of the Symptom Checklist 90 (SCL-90) before the COVID-19 outbreak (October 2020, Time 1), and the Self-rating Anxiety Scale (SAS) and Self-rating Depression Scale (SDS) during the pandemic (April 2020, Time 2). The prevalence of anxiety and depression symptoms were 1.44 and 1.46% at Time 1, and 4.06 and 22.09% at Time 2, respectively, showing a 181.94% increase in anxiety and a 1413.01% increase in depression. Furthermore, the increases in anxiety and depression from pre-pandemic levels were associated with students' gender and the severity of the pandemic in the province where they resided. This study contributes to the gap in knowledge regarding changes in students' mental health in response to the pandemic and the role of local factors in these changes. Implications for gender and the Typhoon Eye effect are discussed.
